Support Worker – Specialist Care

Based – Southampton

Hours: to be discussed: shift pattern 7am to 2.30pm and 2.30pm to 10.00pm

Salary £14.24

The Opportunity

Are you a patient, calm, and dog-loving individual looking for a role where building a genuine bond is the top priority?

We are looking for a dedicated Support Assistant for a 36-year-old man who is motivated, goal-oriented, and looking to expand his independence. He lives with Autism, a mild learning disability, and mental health complexities including OCD and anxiety. He is looking for someone who doesn’t just see a “client,” but sees the person, his ambitions, his sense of humour, and his love for his dog.

The Role

Your primary focus is to be a consistent, calming presence in his life. This is not just “care”—it is partnership. You will:

· Walk & Talk: Daily walks with his dog are the cornerstone of his wellbeing. You’ll use this time to help him process his thoughts and emotions.

· Support Independence: Help him work toward his big goals

· Confidence in Care: Administer medication

· Communication is Key: Use a soft, “indoor” voice and explain things clearly. You’ll need to check for understanding and be honest

About You

We are looking for someone who is emotionally intelligent and grounded. To be successful, you should be:

· A Natural Communicator: You talk to him, not about him. You understand that he is the expert on his own life.

· Patient & Reliable: Trust is built over time here. He has experienced past trauma, so consistency is vital.

· Calm Under Pressure: You can follow Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies, providing space and quiet when he feels overwhelmed.

· Observant: You can spot when a topic is becoming an obsession and gently pivot without feeding the fixation.

· A Dog Lover: His dog is a huge part of the package!

You will also need to have completed all your mandatory training, including a Care Certificate, and hold an up to date DBS check registered on the update service or be prepared to apply for one.
